Joseph Kahn arrived in the United States in New York on Amelia from LeHavre, France on 26 August 1852.  At this time he moved to Warren County, Kentucky, where he married Caroline Weil (Wile).  Like his father, Achil, and grandfather, Josaphat, he was a horseman.  He was operating Kahn's Livery Stable, with his brother Salomon, in Evansville, Indiana by 1863.

The Kahns did not stay still.  Fanny and Harry were born in Kentucky.  Edward and Abe were born in Evansville.  Ida and Clementine were born in St. Paul, Minnesota, where the Kahns lived for about 3 years, 1869 to 1871.  It was then back to Evansville for the births of Helen, Lee, and Rhona.  The family moved south to Memphis in 1889.

Here is a school listing from Bosen, Germany in 1829.

Bosen 1829

10. Achil Kahn and his son Joseph Kahn from Gonnesweiler.

Other entries mention Salomon Kahn, and Abraham Kahn, both of whom emigrated to the US.  These names also turn up in Evansville, so we can assume that they are Joseph's brothers.

This find, confirmed Joseph's father's name, as well as his German home.  From this, many other records have been assembled which carry the family line back even farther.  German research has taken the family roots back to Sarman (Salomon) Kahn, Josaphat's father, who lived in the mid 1700's.

Additionally, information about Joseph's mother, Rosette Levi, has been discovered.   Her family has also been traced back to the mid 1700's.  Please see the Europe page for copies of three of these documents.  They are large files, so please be patient.
