Misery
History
John and Paul composed Misery while the Beatles were on tour with Helen Shapiro in
1963. When she turned down the opportunity to record it, another musician on the
tour ask to do so. Kenny Lynch released his version of Misery on March 22, 1963, the
same day the Beatles version first appeared, on the Please Please Me album.
Misery, takes 1 to 11, was recorded at Abbey Road on February 11, 1963. This was
part of the Beatles all day session to record the Please Please Me album. Since
George Martin planned on overdubbing a piano, the track was recorded at 30 inches per
second, not the standard 15. On the 20th, Martin, with the engineering help of
Stuart Eltham, and Geoff Emerick, overdubbed the piano creating takes 12 to 16. It
was then on February 25th, that Martin did the final mixing of Misery, as he used Take 16
for both the mono and stereo releases.

A Taste Of Honey
History
The recording of A Taste Of Honey also took place at Abbey Road Studio #2 on February
11, 1963. A Taste Of Honey was the first song recorded after lunch. Takes 1 to
5 featured the basic vocal and music tracks. Paul's voice was then overdubbed onto
take 5, creating the double-track vocal sound. This created Takes 6 and 7, and was
the only double-track work on Please Please Me. As with Misery, George Martin
created both the mono and stereo mixes on February 25, using Take 7 as the basis.

Ask Me Why
History
The only song on this EP not from the Please Please Me session is Ask Me Why. It
is one of the first 4 songs recorded by the Beatles at Abbey Road. This session was
probably an Artist's test, to determine if the group was any good, and took place on on
June 6, 1962, with Pete Best as drummer. On this day, the Beatles performed Besame
Mucho, Love Me Do, P.S. I Love You, and Ask Me Why. Only the recording of Besame
Mucho still exists, and whether Studio 2 or 3 was used is not clear.
The released version of this Lennon-McCartney original was recorded on November 26,
1962, as the b-side to Please Please Me (the single). Six takes were completed
rather quickly, and the Beatles second single was finished. Final mono mixing
occurred on November 30th. The stereo mix was not created until February 25, 1964,
when the rest of the Please Please Me album was mixed in stereo.

Anna (Go To Him)
History
Anna took only three takes for the Beatles to record, again during the marathon
sessions on February 11, 1963. Anna was the secong song recorded during the evening
session at Abbey Road. As with Misery, and A Taste Of Honey, the mono and stereo
mixes of Anna were completed on the 25th. George Martin used Take 3 for these final
mix downs.
